Dell Technologies Interview Experience

Anonymous8h ago

These are the problems and questions that I was asked.

Java and JVM

The interview began with Java fundamentals, and the focus was on whether I understood what happens under the hood.

  • What are the different memory areas in the JVM, and what is each one used for?

  • What is the JVM, and how does Java achieve platform independence so the same application can run on different operating systems?

  • What are the key benefits of using Java for backend development?

  • Why is String immutable in Java, how is that immutability achieved, and what benefits does it give?

Microservices and APIs

This was the longest part of the interview, and a lot of my time went here.

  • How have you worked with microservices in your current and previous projects?

  • What is a point-to-point (P2P) API call, and how does one microservice talk directly to another?

  • If the architecture is event-driven, why is synchronous API communication still needed? This one was tricky.

  • Can you walk through the architecture of your project, including the major components and how they interact?

  • What are the different ways microservices can communicate, and when would you choose synchronous over asynchronous or event-driven communication?

  • What is the Saga Pattern, and how does it help manage distributed transactions across multiple microservices?

Kafka and Event-Driven Architecture

  • How can duplicate messages or events occur in Kafka, and how do you handle duplicate processing in a consumer?

  • How would you make a Kafka consumer idempotent so that processing the same event multiple times doesn’t cause duplicate business operations?

PostgreSQL and SQL

  • What is PostgreSQL, and what are its important features?

  • Given Employee and Department tables, write an SQL query to find all departments that don’t have any employees.

  • What are the differences between PostgreSQL and MySQL, and when would you prefer PostgreSQL?

Java Coding

Two coding questions had to be solved in Java:

  • Given an array of integers, find all Pythagorean triplets, for example (3, 4, 5).

  • Given a string, find the first non-repeated character.

Design Patterns and Production Support

  • Design patterns were on my résumé, so the question was which ones I had actually used, and where and why, with real examples from my projects.

  • What is incident management? Describe a production incident you handled, including how it was identified, how the root cause was found, how it was resolved, and how it was prevented from happening again.
