How to Prepare for SDE Placements in Final Year?
Preparing for SDE placements today isn't just about solving DSA problems and memorizing interview questions.
Along with DSA and core CS fundamentals, you should also be ready for practical coding tasks, project discussions, and AI-assisted assessments where these are part of the hiring process.
If you're in your final year, here's what I'd focus on.
1. DSA Is Still Important
Start with arrays, strings, binary search, linked lists, trees, graphs, recursion, and dynamic programming.
Don't just memorize solutions. Understand why an approach works, its time and space complexity, and how you can optimize it.
Try solving a problem using brute force first, then improve it. This habit helps when interviewers change the constraints or ask follow-up questions.
2. Prepare for AI-Assisted Coding Rounds
AI tools are becoming part of software development, and some hiring processes may include AI-assisted coding tasks.
Depending on the assessment, you might need to work with AI-generated code, improve an existing solution, debug errors, or explain the code produced with AI assistance.
Get comfortable with tools like GitHub Copilot or ChatGPT, but don't depend on them blindly.
Understand the code AI generates before using it.
Check edge cases and test the solution properly.
Identify bugs, inefficient logic, and security issues.
Be ready to explain your decisions and make changes without relying entirely on AI.
The goal isn't just to generate code faster. It's to know whether that code is correct and reliable.
3. Strengthen Your Core CS Fundamentals
DBMS, Operating Systems, Computer Networks, and OOPs are still relevant for technical interviews.
Revise topics like indexing, transactions, deadlocks, process vs. thread, TCP vs. UDP, and object-oriented design.
Focus on understanding concepts well enough to explain them clearly and connect them to real software systems.
4. Build Projects That Go Beyond Basic CRUD
A project is more valuable when you understand how it works internally.
If you've built a full-stack application, be prepared to discuss database design, authentication, API performance, error handling, and what you'd change if the number of users increased significantly.
Also, make sure you can explain which parts you implemented yourself and where you used AI tools, if applicable.
5. Practice Debugging and Code Reviews
Writing code from scratch is only one part of software engineering.
Take an existing code snippet, identify bugs, write test cases, improve readability, and look for performance issues. Practice reading unfamiliar code and explaining what it does.
These skills are useful in real development work and can also help you prepare for practical technical assessments.
6. Don't Ignore Online Assessments and Mock Interviews
Practice solving coding questions under time limits, just as you would in an actual assessment.
For interviews, explain your approach before coding, ask clarifying questions, and discuss trade-offs. For AI-assisted tasks, practise reviewing generated code rather than accepting its output immediately.
7. Prepare According to the Companies You're Targeting
Hiring processes differ across companies and roles. Some may focus mainly on DSA and CS fundamentals, while others may include practical coding, project deep dives, system design, or AI-assisted assessments.
Read the instructions for each assessment carefully. Don't assume every company uses the same format or allows AI tools during interviews.
