Infosys HackWithInfy (HWI) Interview Experience

Hi everyone! I recently appeared for the Infosys HackWithInfy (HWI) interview, and I thought of sharing my experience here because it might help other students who are preparing for the interview.

This was one of my first experiences with a company like Infosys, so naturally I was a little nervous before entering the interview. I had prepared mainly around my programming fundamentals, DSA, CS subjects, and the projects and technologies mentioned on my resume.

The Interview

The interview started with a simple introduction. The interviewer asked me to introduce myself and then gradually moved towards my academic background, technical skills and projects.

The interview was not just about answering direct questions. In several places, the interviewer asked follow-up questions based on what I answered. So I felt that having a clear understanding of the concepts mentioned on the resume was much more important than simply memorising definitions.

Technical Discussion

The technical part covered my programming fundamentals and computer science basics. Questions were asked around concepts that I had mentioned in my resume and areas that are generally important for a software engineering role.

There was also discussion around DSA/problem solving, where the focus was more on how I approached the problem and explained my logic rather than simply giving an answer.

The project discussion was another important part. I was asked about my project, the technologies I used, my contribution, and how different parts of the project worked.

One thing I realised during the interview was that when you mention a technology or project on your resume, you should be prepared for the interviewer to ask you questions from it. Even a seemingly simple project can lead to several follow-up questions.

HR / General Questions

Towards the end, the discussion became more conversational. Questions related to my background, career interests and my expectations as a fresher were discussed.

The interviewer also gave me an opportunity to ask questions, which made the overall interaction feel less like a rapid-fire interview and more like a conversation.

My Takeaway

Overall, the interview was a really good learning experience for me.

The biggest thing I took away from it is that strong fundamentals + knowing your resume + being able to explain your thought process matter a lot.

If you're preparing for HWI or a similar fresher interview, I would suggest:

• Don't put anything on your resume that you cannot explain.
• Revise the fundamentals of your strongest programming language.
• Practice basic to medium DSA problems and focus on explaining your approach.
• Revise OOPs, DBMS/SQL and other core CS subjects.
• Be ready to explain your projects from both the technical and practical side.
• Don't panic if you don't know an answer. Take a moment, think about it and communicate your approach honestly.

I'm still waiting for the final outcome, but irrespective of the result, appearing for the HWI interview itself was a valuable experience for me.
