DSA vs Development vs AI | What Should You Prioritize for Campus Placements in 2026?

Anonymous1 week ago

With AI changing the way software is built, many students preparing for campus placements are wondering whether they should spend more time solving DSA problems, building projects, or learning AI tools.

A recent Economic Times report highlights how fresher hiring in India's IT-BPM sector is evolving, with employers increasingly looking for AI, machine learning, data engineering, and other digital skills.

But here's something worth remembering: learning new technologies is important, but developing the ability to think, analyse, and solve problems is just as important.

And that's where DSA plays a major role.

Why DSA Still Matters

  • DSA is not just about solving coding questions or preparing for online assessments. Regular practice helps you develop a structured approach to unfamiliar problems.

  • When you solve a problem, you learn to break it into smaller parts, identify patterns, compare different approaches, and evaluate their efficiency. Over time, this way of thinking becomes useful beyond coding interviews.

  • Whether you're debugging an application, designing a feature, or working with AI-generated code, the ability to reason through a problem and understand why a solution works remains valuable.

Where Do Development and AI Fit In?

  • Development helps you apply your thinking. Building projects teaches you how to turn an idea into a working application, work with APIs and databases, and handle real-world challenges.

  • AI helps you explore new possibilities. Learning to use AI tools effectively can improve your workflow, but you still need the technical understanding to verify the output, identify mistakes, and make informed decisions.

  • These skills complement each other, but they serve different purposes.

What Should You Focus on Before Placements?

If you're targeting general software engineering roles, a practical approach is to:

  • Build strong DSA fundamentals to develop problem-solving ability and prepare for coding rounds.

  • Practise consistently so you learn to approach unfamiliar problems instead of memorising solutions.

  • Build real-world projects to apply your programming knowledge.

  • Explore AI tools and learn how to use them without becoming dependent on them.

The goal is not to choose between DSA, development, and AI. It's to build the ability to think through problems, create solutions, and adapt to new technologies.

AI tools will continue to evolve, frameworks will change, and new technologies will emerge. A strong problem-solving foundation can help you adapt as those changes happen.

Imagine you have three months left before campus placements and can dedicate a few hours every day to preparation.

How would you divide your time?

  • A. 70% DSA, 20% development, 10% AI

  • B. 50% DSA, 30% development, 20% AI

  • C. 50% DSA, 20% development, 30% AI

  • D. A different combination based on your target companies

Which approach would you choose, and why?

Also, do you think DSA has helped you develop a problem-solving mindset that extends beyond coding interviews?
