Sumo Logic | Senior Software Engineer Interview
I interviewed for a Senior Software Engineer role at Sumo Logic. I have four years of experience.
The Interview Process
Round 1 - Online Assessment
The process started with an OA containing two DSA problems:
The focus was on solving the problems efficiently and getting the implementation right within the given time.
Round 2 - HLD: Job Scheduler
The second round was focused entirely on High-Level Design. The problem was to design a Job Scheduler.
What made this round interesting was the depth of the discussion. It wasn't just about drawing the architecture and moving on. Almost every component I proposed was followed by questions like:
Why did you choose this component?
What alternatives could be used?
Why is your choice better for this particular requirement?
What would change if the scale or requirements changed?
So, understanding the reasoning and trade-offs behind every design decision was more important than simply knowing the components.
Round 3 - LLD + AI-Assisted Coding
The third round was an LLD round, but with an interesting twist. I was asked to use an AI assistant to implement the LLD problem.
The interviewer was not primarily evaluating how much code I could write. The focus was more on:
Understanding the requirements
Structuring the solution properly
Choosing appropriate design patterns
Reviewing and reasoning about the AI-generated implementation
Explaining why the design made sense
So, the important part was being able to understand and drive the design rather than blindly relying on the AI assistant.
Round 4 - Techno-Managerial
The final round lasted around 1.5 hours and was a deep dive into my previous experience.
A significant portion of the discussion revolved around my past projects, along with various software engineering and HLD topics.
There was also a behavioral component. Some of the areas discussed included:
How I handle conflicts
How I approach code reviews
Things I have done to improve engineering processes
The most technically challenging problem I have solved
Architectural and technical decisions from my previous projects
This round was more conversational but went quite deep into both my technical experience and how I approach engineering problems.
Verdict
Selected.
Overall, the process covered a good mix of DSA, HLD, LLD, AI-assisted coding, software engineering practices, and behavioral discussions. For the senior-level rounds, being able to explain the reasoning behind technical decisions was especially important.
