How I Cracked a Data Engineer Internship in 3 Rounds | Interview Experience

HR Screening

The first round was a brief profile and HR screening discussion. I introduced myself, discussed my technical skills and explained some of my notable projects.

The discussion mainly focused on:

• Preferred technologies and libraries

• Technical background and projects

• Interest in the Data Engineer role

• Expectations from my first job

After clearing the initial screening, I proceeded to the technical assessment.

Technical Assessment

The assessment covered basic programming, data structures, SQL, and DBMS concepts.

Coding

The coding questions started with a basic string reversal problem and then moved to linked-list operations, including:

• Adding a node at the beginning of a linked list

• Adding a node at the end of a linked list

• Adding a node in the middle of a linked list

SQL

The SQL portion focused on fundamental database operations and concepts:

• SQL JOINs

• DML commands

• Differences between various SQL commands

DBMS

The remaining questions covered core DBMS principles:

• Database normalization

• ACID properties

Final Task & Manager Interview

The final round consisted of a programming task followed by a manager interview.

Programming Task

The programming task was to write a script that could transliterate English text into Hindi.

The task tested my ability to understand a practical problem, determine an appropriate approach, and implement the solution.

Manager Interview

After the programming task, the manager discussed questions related to my motivation, problem-solving approach, and career goals.

Some of the questions included:

• Why do you want to join the Data team despite your broader technical background?

• How would you approach a problem when you don't immediately know the solution?

• Why do you want to begin your career with this organization?

The discussion was more focused on understanding my reasoning, adaptability, and motivation rather than purely testing technical knowledge.

Result

I successfully reached the final stage and was selected for the internship.
